Lost Your Spirit, Wanna Get It Back?

Spiritual awakening can help us develop a more intimate relationship with our true self. However, if not careful, burnout can happen, which makes us lose our mojo. Here is how you can renew and regain your Spirit.

Maybe you resonate with this too. Many of us have this fantasy, “As soon as I’ve done XYZ, I’ll be so in touch with my Spirit and will never lose it again”.

I thought that as soon as I quit my job and started a business, heart-based and spirit-led, I’ll always be in Spirit.

As you may have guessed, that was naïve.

I’ll never forget my first burnout after I started this business.

I was on the phone with my mentor, and we were supposed to talk about my business growth, however, I wasn’t very motivated and just couldn’t carry on.

“You know what, I really want to sleep. Nothing but sleep.” I sighed with a mixture of relief and guilt.

She laughed, and told me gently that she was in a very similar situation when she was 4-5 months into her business. “Yeah, we love our work so much and we end up torturing ourselves by doing it.”

I was very grateful that she got me. She didn’t blame me that “you are such a workaholic, stop being so hard on yourself, why don’t you see your own blindspot…etc”. Instead, she laughed it off with me. We both knew that it was just a first-hand lesson for me to learn.

The lesson which we all know in our head, but somehow it slips away from time to time:

If we are not mindful or careful enough, we can easily lose your Spirit, regardless of how much we love what you do.

Prior to this burnout, I had high energy for around 6 months.

I smiled to strangers walking in central London. I praised people so freely. I celebrated for my family and friends wholeheartedly…

I was open and in love with life – so open that I wasn’t aware of the need to “change the gear” and switch off.

Because of this openness, I manifested many unexpected opportunities, including getting paid just for my “presence”. During my last two months of my corporate contract I ended up doing almost nothing but got paid anyway. (For the record, I did raise this to my client and offered to leave immediately but they insisted on paying me just to relax in the office and make people feel good).

However, I took this high energy for granted. I forgot how I tapped into it initially: keeping my centre and being detached from external results.

Instead, I slipped into “attracting more and better at an even faster rate”, without recognising the importance of slowing down and breathing out.

I got so depleted before I even realised it.

I didn’t make time to appreciate how far I had already come, instead, I was dwelling on: “what else needs to be done”…Then anxiety and burnout took over.

In a nutshell, I forgot about my Spirit. I forgot that my Spirit wanted to be in the picture too. I overlooked my wellbeing, my joy, my love of connection,…ie, the foundation of a creative, heart-based business.

1. Calling Your Spirit Back

Once we realise that we’ve lost our connection with our Spirit, the simplest and most immediate way to call our Spirit back can be done through breathing.

For example, you can try this Walking the Eight meditation.

  1. Find a space where you feel safe and undisturbed.
  2. Place two objects such as chairs or stones apart which serve as anchor points for you to talk a figure of 8 around them.
  3. Before you start walking, connect with your environment, close your eyes, and gently breathe in through your nose to your belly.
  4. As you find a comfortable breathing rhythms, open your eyes. Start walking clockwise in a figure of 8, circling the first object, then the next. Throughout your walk, pay attention to your breaths.
  5. Continue walking in this pattern and breathing. Observing your thoughts and feelings, let them come and go, rise and fall.
  6. Keep walking for 5-15 minutes. As you are settling into your being, feel your Spirit coming back to you.
  7. Once you are ready, slow down, close this practice with a prayer, think about what you are grateful for.

2. Media fast or retreat

To solidify your connection with your Spirit, it is important to carve out space in your life.

I had a social media fast week, which really helped me to slow down and notice those small, beautiful and undervalued moments in daily life.

I started to smile to strangers again.

I got back into the habit of writing “morning pages” long-hand.

I gave my attention to my city, London – I nearly forgot that it existed while I was full-on launching my website and services.

Everyday, I created some non-schedule time, which I intended to be nothing but spontaneous. I asked my Spirit to guide me…

A couple of weeks later, a new wave of paying clients arrived. I didn’t even do anything special. Just that my energy was “right” again.

I called my Spirit back.

3. Renew Your Spirit

Dear friend, if you feel demotivated or stuck lately, the immediate solution is perhaps renewing your Spirit.

If you want to feel your own energy/Spirit, your heart, your deepest desires now, here are a few things you can do:

1) listen to this meditation to reconnect with your Spirit, your Inner-Master.

2) a week long silence retreat

3) visit a temple or your most trusted friend + feel the presence of light and pure prayer

4) learn the art of tea (knowing how to appreciate tea can purify your emotions)

5) learn some Daoist breathing techniques

6) go on roller coaster ride – it breaks off your existing pattern in a weird yet profound way.

7) throw a “how far I’ve come party” even if just with your own Spirit – to be honest that’s more than sufficient. If you decide to do it today, I’ll be here holding the energetic space for you too!

  1. It is so enjoyable to read your posts! It is easy to get confused and lost in today’s world. I am grateful that you’ve recorded and shared your journey, which gives a very helpful perspective to me now!

  2. Hi there it’s me, I am also visiting this
web site daily, this web site is in fact pleasant and the
people are really sharing good thoughts.

  3. So refreshing to read this, yes to all, it has been disheartening to lose my connection (or feel i have lost it) even when I too, have promised myself, never again 🙂 Thank you so much for this honest and open post.. i so need to get back into morning pages.. and having silent down time, just discovered your site, love it, look forward to reading your gift, thank you, namaste

  4. Thanks Yiye, what a perfect reminder of what to do. I have had my own business for nearly a decade, and I have regular meltdowns when I just want to sleep! Most of the time I do ‘just enough’ to refuel when I absolutely have to, so I’m trying to build in regular days off and creativity days where I just have fun and create. I love your ideas, I’m going to try some of them! x

  5. What a nice reminder of how we need to take care of ourselves and like you said it: it is because we love doing what we do so much that we can forget to take that much needed break to return to our center.
