This is what many people do when they start a business or kick off a project. They look for validations from ANYONE that they can find (friends, family, co-workers, neighbours) on everything they are about to do (how much should I charge, should I network face-to-face or via an online community? Am I good enough to do this?).
They will then probably receive contradicting advice all the time and are not sure what to do next – they will simply end up where they were before everything was started.
Others are doing the opposite, not seeking guidance or feedback at all. Then after 6 months of hustling they may discover there is no market for their offering.
But you will do it differently, to save your time, frustration and more importantly to excel.
Let’s talk about what NOT ask for feedback on first – your vision and concept that is.
If you look at all the great inventors in the history, the Wright brothers, Edison, they were all laughed at big time, but fortunately they never gave in.
I am not saying that you must be an inventor or famous either. However serving your vision is the best and most powerful way for you to change the world for the better, no matter if you want it to be big or relatively small.
Your vision is who you are, if you compromise it, you’ll sell yourself short.
Your vision is something that makes every cell in your body come alive.
You are the vessel to express your vision, the messenger to deliver it to the world. That’s your purpose, that’s what makes your life meaningful.
Through your vision, you serve, you love, you share, you inspire, you empower and you heal.
You can NEVER be wrong with your own vision. You are like a snowflake and no other snowflake in the entire world is exactly the same as you!
No matter what you decide to do later on, you must trust in your own vision, if you want to express your highest purpose.
Protect your vision. Only share it with those who support you.
Unfortunately, our society hasn’t evolved to a stage that you bump into your friends, and they ask you graciously, “Hey Joe, what’s up? What’s your unique vision? How can I help you today?”
Hands up if you are considered at least a little crazy by your colleagues/acquaintances or even friends/family?
When you start to realise your vision, your thing, it’s like planting a seed. You must make sure that they are safe all the way to harvest. They are way too precious to be killed at the starting line. This is particularly important for artists who have just started their journey or recovered from a creativity block.
Head to where your vision and your heart stand, then the rest will follow. It is not necessarily all easy, but much easier than ignoring it or compromising it, then 50 years later you wake up and want to start all over again.
However, note that the same thing can have different meanings to different people. For example, a domain name is considered as a technical aspect for some people like Tim Ferriss, using “four hour work week” to generate traffic to his blog; while to others including myself, a domain name is part of the vision, and cannot be changed. You need to ask your inner-voice to distinguish this for yourself.
Next week, we’ll talk about 5 things that you MUST ask for feedback on, and equally importantly, who to ask from, and in which order.
With love,
Yiye
