Life often presents subtle moments that reveal unseen aspects of yourself – these awaken a natural impulse to create. It usually starts with one tiny thing, then like a gate opening up, something stirs inside, and more and more passions also catch your attention.
You are stirred, moved, inspired. You feel a gentle pull toward your calling. You cannot help but want to give more of you to your creative vision. Deep in the bones, you know that it heals you and helps others. That urge, that yearning – it is very real.
Our vision is beautiful – but the reality doesn’t seem to match it, at least not yet.
Meanwhile, you might feel discouraged by the natural tension between your vision and your reality.
This tension is not your fault, nor a sign of failure. It’s a natural part of the creative journey, a reminder that creation is a path of exploration and alignment.
As Daoist wisdom teaches, sometimes the path forward is not about forcing the gap closed, but allowing vision and reality to dance together.

1. Dancing with the Gap
If we do want to create with peace, then we need to quit the perfectionism.
You already know this intellectually, however, the tension between what you are capable of making in the future and where you are now is taking up a lot of your emotional and mental space.
On the creative path, the gap between what you imagine and what you produce is always present. Whether you are a dancer, painter, designer, photographer, or on any new creative journey, reality often resists your ideals.
And you are not the only one…
I remember a while ago that I saw one of Da Vinci’s quotes, “My work has offended God and mankind because it hasn’t reached the standard it should have”. If that is how he felt about his work, how does the rest of us face ours?
At first, I chuckled – if even Da Vinci felt this way about his work, perhaps the rest of us might be justified in giving up entirely.
However looking back now, I see the pain between vision and reality he was talking about. We are no genius, but the source of underlying pain is the same. You are certainly not on your own.
Instead of resisting this gap, accept it. Allow yourself to move with it. Each small practice, each attempt, gradually brings your vision closer to expression. As the ancients say, “Dao follows nature” – flow with it, and your creativity will unfold naturally.
2. Give your work a guiding light

What is the message behind your work? What universal truth are you expressing in your own unique way?
Purpose fuels persistence. If we focus only on perfect technique or flawless outcomes, we disconnect from the heart of our work. Honour the energy behind what you create, and even the simplest output can touch the right people.
And if we fail, it is not because our techniques aren’t perfect, it is because we disconnect with our purpose. On the contrary, if you deliver your purpose, it doesn’t really matter if your work is 100% polished, you’ve got the energy right and it will touch the people as it is meant to.
We should always aim to have a good standard of work of course, but just be careful, try not to let the nit-picking steal away the original joy.
3. Reconnect with your inner landscape / inner child
**When I first wrote this blog post in 2012, I just came back from the zoo, and while I was writing I still couldn’t forget what I saw: cheekiness in monkeys, cuteness in giant pandas, ferocity in lions…
Each creature was raw and alive, and yet profoundly touching simply because they were unapologetically themselves.
It is easier for animals to be this way due to their nature. We were also good at that when we were toddlers – creative and expressive straight from the heart.
However once we grow up, we forget who we are. Our minds are filled with too many: “shouldn’t”, “can’t”, “not good enough”.
We hide our inner child deeply to protect from any criticism. We must unlearn the B.S. that has been imposed on us.
Now is the time to reclaim it. Notice the limiting beliefs and focus on your strengths – they can guide you to start, iterate, and persist. Keep the amateur’s heart – “amateur” in Latin means love. Let love be the fuel for your creation.
Through self-compassion and inner alignment, you can reconnect with your innate curiosity and freedom.
On this path, the Inner Child Alchemy Course: a gentle return to wonder. It can support you rekindle the spark of your inner world, where curiosity and play naturally weave healing.
4. Explore creating with ease
Fear of showing your work can creep in, creating resistance. Yet sharing your creations is not a loss of control; it is a practice of natural flow.
Daoist philosophy reminds us: “Reversal is the movement of Dao.” Vision and reality are complementary, not opposed. Ask yourself:
“If I were already living my vision, how would I act today?”
When you follow this inner rhythm, presenting your work becomes a natural extension of your creative flow, a step toward building an energetic ecosystem around your vision.
For a full exploration of how to channel your creative energy into tangible expression, the Become Your Own Creative Alchemist Course provides soulful guidance and practices to let your ideas flow from inner inspiration into shapes and forms. From seeds to ripening, together, we’ll explore effortless action and bring your soulwork into fruition.
Creativity is a journey, not a one-time achievement. It thrives on daily awareness, inner healing, and honouring your authentic self. By dancing with the gap, letting your work carry meaning, reconnecting with your inner terrain, and presenting your creations with ease, you move from “checking off tasks” to experiencing the fullness of creative integration.
- 🍂 Each creation becomes a harvest: a natural maturation from your own rhythm.
- 🌿 What is completed is an integration of a process, not just a ticked-off list.
- 🌀 Looking back, it resonates and feels alive.
- 💛 It nourishes your inner world, leaving you with a sense of belonging: a piece of yourself reclaimed.
- 📦 And it quietly fertilizes the next cycle of creation, planting seeds for what is yet to come.
Unlike fleeting satisfaction, creative alchemy honours the life in the process, keeps the fire alive, and naturally links the present with what’s coming next.
